<Provocation> How do we create a brave environment where people feel they can speak up? We cannot guarantee each other’s safety, so how do we nurture bravery? And I’m thinking of creating communities in general, and specifically on this site. How can we get the voices we often talk *about* to participate? I’m thinking of those new to #OpenEducation, those who haven’t felt comfortable sharing their thoughts publicly, those who haven’t been asked what they think, those who have experienced systemic racism, have been excluded because of who they are, those whose starting point has been below zero, those who have not experienced the promise of education or access to resources. We’d like to hear how you experience communities, how you feel a part of them or don’t. Whether it is desirable to be among like-minded people — how you know when you are, and what you do next.</Provocation>
2020 has been a bear so far! And rather than not do hard things because amidst all the inequity they seem harder, we’re going to dig into the discomfort and insist that this is an opportunity to bring people together — to try out this #OpenDialogue thing — to talk about the hard things and to do it with integrity, humility and respect for each other.
Please please please be part of this.
Post your reflection/reaction on our community site, and, if you want, include a short reflection describing how your representation captures something vital about inclusive design. You can also post your inclusive design metaphor to Twitter with the hashtag #InclusiveDesignUnguide. Capitalize each word and then people who use screen readers will have it read correctly, and everyone else can read it with more ease.
We invite you to make your thinking on these questions visible by making an artifact – you choose the medium. Write a blog post or a tweet, create or mashup an image, record a video, scribble something down on paper and take a picture, or whatever else moves you. If you’re so inclined, you can share your make with others by posting to social media using the hashtag #InclusiveDesignUnguide, upload it directly to this site’s Reflection Bank, or comment directly on the provocation blog post. If you’d rather not share your make, that’s fine too.
