The line that jumped out to me from the provocation was “We’d like to hear how you experience communities, how you feel a part of them or don’t.” Thinking about “how you feel a part of them,” my mind went to how we enter them, join them. My experience has been that it can be difficult to enter a community – never mind feel a part of it – without an invitation. That invitation might be implicit or explicit, held by one or more gatekeepers. And it’s not always clear who the gatekeepers are, or how to score an invitation. For me, when I’m feeling brave, that means that I end up awkwardly knocking on doors and asking for an invitation. Maybe that’s ok, I don’t know. But it feels less like a welcome, and more like busting through a door.
